LTTE terrorist behind Wellawatta bomb attack arrested

The bomber behind the yesterday's (June 4) bomb attack that wounded over 20 innocent civilians in Wellawatte was arrested by the police last night. According to the defence sources, the police and civil defence force personnel on duty at Irattaperiyakulama roadblock had made the arrest as the suspect had attempted pass through towards Vavuniya.

The civil defence force personnel had detained the suspect first and once they had tried to produce him to the officer in charge of the roadblock he had attempted to escape. The suspect was taken into custody by the police.

Later, suspect identified as Jatheesan Balasubramaniyam, a resident of Wattala confessed that he was the LTTE cadre who had carried out yesterday's bomb attack. According to the sources, the terrorist had aimed to carryout a civilian massacre by exploding the bomb inside one of the crowded train coach but was afraid to continue with the plan as there were few armed forces members inside the coach. Then, the bomber had placed the bomb on the railway track hoping to cause the maximum possible damage, the sources added.

The suspect said to have received the bomb from another terror agent in the Modara area. Police investigations are in progress.
