Army gains further ground as clashes continue in Mannar and Welioya

Army soldiers venturing out further northwards from the recently liberated Adampan town, in Mannar captured an LTTE trench defence and a fortified strongpoint located in the Minukkal area this morning (May 14).

According to the defence sources on the Mannar battlefront, the soldiers advanced about 2.5 km northwards from Adampan town and captured the terror strong point around 11.45 am after a heavy gun battle. Ground troops have confirmed at least 4 terrorists were killed in this incident. During the subsequent search, a body of an LTTE cadre have been found along with a T-56 riffle, an RPG weapon and 3 RPG bombs.

Elsewhere, on the same front , a sniper reported to have killed one LTTE cadre detected in the Alankulma area around 10.40 am. Troops engaged in clearing operations reported to have removed 54 anti personnel mines , three booby traps and found 8 hand grenades from the same area during the day.

Meanwhile, on the Welioya front, troops advancing into the Mulaithiuvu district, attacked an LTTE trench defence this afternoon, said the defence sources. Following the attack troops found a body of a female LTTE cadre along with T-56 weapon, 2 hand grenades and ammo.

Limited offensives are continuing.
