100 motor vehicles distributed for Police officers

United States helps police reduce human trafficking in Sri Lanka

Today U.S. Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission James R. Moore and Mohamed Abdi Ker Mohamud, Chief of Mission of the International Organization for Migration, officially obtainable police officials with a training set of courses intended to stop, recognize, and put on trial human trafficking offenses in Sri Lanka.
Human trafficking is the third major and best growing criminal developed in the world. To help Sri Lanka counter this growing threat, the U.S. Government has provided $500,000 to hold up trafficking prevention programs, make stronger trial, and get better injured social gathering protection. Part of this monetary support was used by the International Organization on Migration (IOM) to get bigger a new set of courses that has turn out to be fraction of standard police training across the country.
"The United States is pleased to hold up these labors to eliminate human trafficking in Sri Lanka," stated James R. Moore, U.S. Deputy Chief of Mission. LTTE pistol group of criminals assassinated a Police Constable attached to the Chenkalady Police post in Batticaloa Thursday (16 October) evening, Police sources said.

A bomb found in Kandy

Police personnel in Kandy Police have uncovered a bomb weighing around 1Kg from the Balagolla area, a suburb in Kandy, while conducting a search operation on information received this morning, 22 August.

The bomb contained gelignite sticks and C-4 high explosive, had been hidden in a sand mound near the privately owned residence in the Balagolla area, sources said.

Police personnel during a search operation carried out early this morning found a 64 feet long safety fuse (a cord used to detonate explosives) inside the night mail train running from Madawachchiya to Anuradhapura. According to the Media Centre for National Security (MCNS) the cord was found while hidden inside a toilet.

A 15Kg Claymore mine uncovered - Anuradhapura

The special Police Investigation Team of North Central Province has uncovered a claymore mine weighing of 15Kg along with a circuit and a remote control device from Anuradhapura area last night, 16 August, MCNS said.

Police nabs three-wheeler while smuggling 613 gelignite rods- Negombo

The Giriulla Police acting on 'Intel' information received followed and nabbed a three-wheeler while smuggling 613 gelignite rods and detonator codes at Matthegama in Bopitiya, along the Negombo - Kurunegala main road bordering the Gampaha and Kurunegala districts today(July 6) at 8.30 p.m.

The three-wheeler along with a suspect and gelignite rods were taken into Police custody, Giriulla Police sources said. The three-wheeler was plying towards Chilaw and Puttalam a Police official said, adding that 10 detonator code rolls were also found during the searches conducted.

LTTE claymore explosion wounds 6 people in Eravur - Batticaloa

LTTE terrorists have carried out an indiscriminate claymore attack in front of Eravur Railway station around 8.10 pm today (July 03), says the defence sources. According to the sources, 3 civilians and 3 police officers have been injured in the explosion. The injured have been admitted to the General Hospital Eravur.

The bomb has been fixed onto a push bicycle parked near the station, the sources said. The police officers have been in the police jeep, which has been patrolling in the area, the sources added.

New IGP assumes duties

Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Jayantha Wickremaratne will assume duties as the new Inspector General of Police on July 1, taking over the reins from IGP Victor Perera who retires tomorrow.

DIG Wickremaratne completed his education at Thurstan College and later obtained an Honours Degree in Public Administration from Sri Jayawardenepura University in 1973. He received his Post Graduate Diploma Certificate in Criminology from Sri Jayewardenepura University recently.

Mr. Wickremaratne joined the police Force in 1974 as an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and was promoted to the rank of Superintendent of Police in 1983. He was promoted as a Senior SP in 1989 and Deputy Inspector General of Police in 1993.

Wickremaratne is a member of the National Dangerous Drug Control Board, Director National Child Protection Authority, Council Member of the International Police Organisation, Secretary and the President of the Police Savings Association.

He was also the President of the Sri Lanka Amateur Kabadi Federation in 2001 and Chairman of the Police Kabadi Tournament Committee since year 2000.

Film Corporation director behind Colombo civilian massacres arrested [Corrected]

Sri Lanka police intelligence sleuths yesterday (June 20) arrested the mastermind behind recent civilian massacres carried out in Colombo and suburbs by the LTTE terrorists. According to the police sources, the terrorist has been acting as a handler of "suicide bombers" and the main distributor of bombs for the terrorist network in the South.

Police media spokesperson, Senior Superintendent of Police Ranjith Gunasekara speaking to the defence.lk said that, the arrest was made last evening during a special raid carried out in the Kotahena area. He said the arrest was made on information provided by one of suicide bomber arrested in the Wellawatte area few days ago. The said suicide bomber had been handled by the terrorist who was arrested yesterday, he added.

"The terrorist was found in possession of an identity card issued by the National Film Corporation calling him to be a Director of the Corporation", he said.

"Also, he has a shop in the first floor of the Kotahena Supermarket where he used to keep the suicide cadre harboured during night hours", he further said.

Police media spokesperson refrained from revealing the names of the two suspects but confirmed that both of them have already confessed the crimes they had committed against innocent civilians.

"It was this "director" who had sent the female suicide bomber on the mission that killed 14 people including 7 school boys of the D.S Senanayake College at the Fort railway station on 3rd February in the wake of the independence day celebrations", he said.

"The suicide bomber who was arrested in this case is the one who had made the bombs under his handler's shelter at the shop at Kotahena". "The 'Director' was the one who had distributed the bombs to the other bombers to carryout civilian massacres" he added.

defence.lk further learnt that the police had found 9.5 kg of high explosives, a stock of detonators , iron balls weighing 1.5kg, and batteries with the suicide bomber. During the interrogations made he had revealed vital information on the LTTE network in the south.

The suicide bomber has told the police that he had been engaged in reconnaissance operations on VIP movements close to the Government Information Department at Narahenpita during recent past.

According to our sources, the suicide bomber had requested from the Wanni to give him a target as soon as possible for he could end his life and the immense mental agony that he had been suffering. The suicide bomber has further told the police that he does not wish to die for the LTTE any longer and agreed to give his full cooperation for the investigations, the sources added.

Meanwhile, the "Director" has revealed that he was to participate for a cultural show held at BMICH yesterday (21). The Prime Minster and Minister Mahinda Yapa Abewardane were also to participate for the same event. Police have found an invitation addressed to the terrorist for the said event issued by the Director of Cultural Department.

Five suicide jackets found; suspect detained - Chilaw

Police acting on an information received from intelligence sources found 5 jackets designed for the LTTE suicide bombers from Maina Doopatha (an islet) in the Chilaw area this evening (May 30). According to the police sources, only four out of the five jackets were filled with high explosives.

Police said the jackets were unearthed from a location close to an abandoned Hindu Temple around 6.30 pm. A person was also detained for further inquiries, the sources added.

LTTE is the terror outfit that pioneered the suicide terrorism and introduced recruitment, brainwashing, and technical expertise for suicide bombing to the terrorist organizations in the world over. Police find LTTE claymore in public transport bus - Moratuwa

Sri Lanka police personnel on duty at the main bus stand, Moratuwa have found a claymore mine inside a public transport bus around 9.30 pm, today (May 30).

According to the police sources the bomb has been found inside a parcel placed under the rear seat of the bus that completed its trip from Colombo. The bomb has not been armed, but the detonator and few electrical batteries have been found with the bomb, the sources said.

Air Force bomb disposal team defused the bomb, the sources added.
