Sri Lanka Air Force today (August 1) carried out three close air support missions for the advancing troops of Army 57 and 59 divisions in the Wanni battlefronts.
According to Air Force spokesperson Wing Commander Janaka Nanayakkara, all three missions were carried out using MI-24 Helicopter Gunships targeting locations where LTTE terrorists were giving heavy resistance to the soldiers marching ahead.
The first raid was carried out around 11.40 AM targeting an LTTE defensive position located 15 Km Northeast of Nadunkerni , said the Air Force spokesman. He said the target located on the tank bund of the Tannimurippukulam tank was taken in support of troops of 59 division fighting in the Welioya battlefront.
The second and third missions were carried out in support of troops of 57 division advancing towards the strategically vital Tunukkai town, on the combined Mannar- Vavuniya battlefront.
According to the Air Force spokesperson, the first of the last two attacks was carried out targeting a location 4 Km Southeast of Tunukkai junction around 3 PM. The last raid was carried out targeting location 6 Km South East of the Tunukkai town, he said.
Wing Commander Nanayakkara added that the exact damage caused to the enemy due to these raids is yet to be ascertained.

Leader of Mullaittivu LTTE women wing killed in clashes- Army
Sri Lanka Army yesterday (July 31) claimed that LTTE's self styled Lieutenant Colonel Kumaveri Thangeamma had been killed in a confrontation with troops of Army 59 Division occurred in the Mullaittivu forest . According to the sources, the said terrorist had been identified as the leader of the LTTE's women's wing in the Mullaittivu area.
Citing radio monitoring units, Military sources revealed the said LTTE leader had been killed during a clash flared up in North of Kiriibbanwewa area around 1.30 PM on Thursday (July 31). Also, 3 other LTTE cadres who had been providing escort to the slain LTTE leader had died in this incident, the sources further said. The names of the escorts as indicated by the radio monitoring reports were Kanthimani, Pushparani, and Magolechchami.
Meanwhile, another LTTE female group leader identified as Madavani was reportedly killed in a separate confrontation occurred in the Mullaittivu forest, at a location North of Janakapura on Thursday afternoon.
According to the reports, pitched battles are going in the Mullaittivu forest at present as troops penetrating the dense jungle in three frontiers; Janakapura, Kiriibbanwewa, and Kokkutoduvai areas.
On Tuesday (July 29) another LTTE woman leader identified as a woman "Lieutenant Colonel" Kadiravani and "Captain" Vageesan had been killed in a seven hour long pitched battle occurred in the Welioya, said a separate report. Initial reports received on this confrontation had indicated only 3 deaths to the terrorists, but later radio units of the LTTE had revealed the deaths of the terror leaders, the reports added.
According to the observers of the LTTE activities, it is the long held practice of the LTTE leadership to use women cadre at the most vulnerable frontiers. Exploiting gender discrimination, bigotry on cast and extreme poverty prevailing in the Wanni regions LTTE has been able to recruit large number of Tamil women into its ranks. Due to these hapless conditions suffered by the Tamil women in the areas under terror clutches, V. Prabhakaran is known to be the terror chief who has been able to brainwash most number of women suicide bombers in the world.

Tamil Nadu police Q branch nabs two linchpins of LTTE procurement net
In its latest sweeps against the banned Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in Tamil Nadu the anti-terrorist operation unit of the Police, the Q Branch announced that it has two prize catches in their hands for police interrogation.
They said J. Thambi Annan alias Daniel (46) a confidante of the LTTE leadership hailing from Kilinochchi, the Tamil Tiger stronghold, who was engaged in procurement activities of warlike material in the Southern Indian state and Sea Tiger leader Soosai's nephew Vijayaneethan alias Naveen (26) who has been specially trained for military sea attacks, living in the South Indian state, under their arrest.
Describing the arrest of Daniel the Q Branch said he is a "significant and important catch". The middle aged man , a Sri Lankan National, was heading the LTTE''s procurement department and has been in the top of the outfit's hierarchy, according to top officials of the anti-terrorist unit. He came to India about a month ago in a ferry and was followed by the police to obtain information about his contacts in the state. He was trying to smuggle gasoline this time, a badly needed ingredient for their war in Sri Lanka , the police said. He was wanted in connection with smuggling of explosives, swimming and communication equipment among others for the Tamil Tigers.
Daniel has been described as the most important LTTE agent in Tamil Nadu procuring major consignments, including explosive substances, for the LTTE from India and other parts of the world, turning the Southern Indian state into a major supply centre for the ongoing war and terrorist activities in Sri Lanka .
He was also involved, according to the latest investigations, in the attempts to smuggle consignments of aluminium ingots and ball bearings, which were seized by the police in Ramanathapuram and Madurai districts recently. In fact, the police had got its leads to arrest him after those failed attempts, the police said. Since he could not send the consignments from Ramanathapuram he was planning alternative routes through Tanjavur and Pudukottai, the police said.
The younger Naveen, son of Sea Tiger leader Soosai's brother was arrested due to the investigation of the above procurement network in the state of Tamil Nadu.
He happens to be the son of the brother of Soosai, one of the top three of the LTTE hierarchy including Prabhakaran and Pottuamman. Soosai, was born as Thillaiyambalam Sivanesan, and his brother is Sivasekeran. Intense questioning revealed that Naveen was the son of Sivasekaran and belonged to the Sea Tigers. He was specially trained in seaborne terror attack against conventional forces.
It was also revealed that Naveen joined the terrorist movement as a child soldier at the age of 13 and was active in the outfit for more than a decade, till he left the island in 2006. He was living with his wife and two children at a refugee camp in Tiruvadavur in Madurai district. He stayed a few weeks in the Mandapam camp before being shifted to Tiruvadavur.
The police suspect that he had connections with Daniel and other lesser procurement agents of the LTTE. According to Q branch investigations, he had good contacts with several refugees living in camp at Kottapattu in Tiruchi and at other camps across Tiruchi district.

New UK TV channel a pro-LTTE move?
A new television channel, Thendral TV, launched in the UK and commencing telecasts on July 14, 2008, has come under suspicion of being a pro-LTTE station.
The new transmission commenced telecasts barely a month after the Israeli decision to close down Tharishanam TV transmission after the Israel authorities were informed about the link between the terrorist organisation and Tharishanam.
It is also reported that the transmission licence for Thendral TV was obtained by a well-known LTTE supporter through the Tendral Medical Centre.
The transmission rights have been acquired from Nepali Television, which is a Nepali language television service established several years ago in UK.
Thendral TV is using frequency 11.727 of EUtelsat Hotbird and its UK service provider's address is Crawley Court, Winchester, Hampshire SO21 2QA.
Thendral TV is registered under Thendral Media Ltd UK at 135 Q, Alexandra Park Road, London N22 7UL, United Kingdom.
Analysts believe that the Thendral TV would initially telecast songs and cultural programmes and gradually move onto hard LTTE propaganda material to assist the terrorist organisation in its fund raising activities.
"It is surprising how and why Nepal TV allowed its transmission channel to be used by a front organization of LTTE, a terrorist organization banned not only in EU, UK and USA but also in India" a media-watch analyst said, expressing surprise that the transmission is taking place from UK, a country totally committed to anti-terrorism should take effective action to prevent transmission".
Earlier the Tamil Tigers' test transmissions of its Euro television channel from Israel using the RR Sat of Tel Aviv for uplink facility was stopped.
The Asian Tribune reported about this transmission last month in a story titled 'LTTE's Euro TV moves to Israel after blockade by France and Italy'.
The LTTE is desperately trying to get new television and radio channels established as all the previous transmissions from France, Italy, Singapore and Israel were stopped by relevant authorities after establishing that these transmissions were linked to the terrorist group.

Fierce gun battle in Mannar front; 7 LTTE bodies recovered
Seven LTTE bodies were recovered following a fierce gun battle erupted between the security forces and LTTE terrorists in general area north of Mundampiddi in Mannar front this afternoon, July 31.
The latest report received from the battlefront said that troops in Task Force-1 attacked at terror stronghold located in north of Mundampiddi around 2.15 p.m. inflicting maximum damages to the enemy. 3 T-56 weapons, 2 hand grenades were also uncovered along with the 7 bodies of the slain LTTE cadres during the search operation conducted, the report added.
Troops have gained total control over 5 square kilometer area as the terrorists fled with their casualties in a face of effective fire power launched by the advancing troops. The further consolidating operations are now underway.

Security forces pound LTTE bunker positions: 8 terrorists killed, 19 wounded- Palamoddai
Advancing troops of the Task Force-2 operating in Palamoddai general area at the Wanni battle theater mounted heavy mortar and artillery attacks Wednesday (July 30) killing at least 8 terrorists, injuring 19 others, military sources said.
According to finalized reports received from the battlefront troops have advanced into LTTE bunker positions overwhelming terrorists and seizing control over 8 bunkers killing at least 7 terrorists alone, while LTTE transmission were cited as another 15 seriously injured. Troops pounced at the LTTE defences in a surprise assault launched in general area Palamoddai, at around 6p.m. 4 soldiers were also reported wounded in the skirmishes, military said.

Untiring Secretary Defence Gotabaya Rajapaksa, military heavyweights, Chief of Defence Staff Air Chief Marshal Donald Perera, Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka and senior Army officers Thursday (31) morning extended their warm greetings and plaudits to advancing ground troops in the Mannar & Vavuniya sector for their string of military successes in the most recent past. Those sentiments were conveyed to 58 Division Commanders and other Wanni based Commanders during meetings the visiting team has had today in Mannar and Vavuniya.
Thursday (31) morning's helitour to Mannar area by this top-level defence official and military chiefs as first leg of the tour was also meant to promote the morale of the ground troops fighting the most ruthless terror outfit in the world further, and map out future strategies to continue their forward march, in order to salvage besieged Tamil civilians in Kilinochchi and Mullaithivu districts while bringing peace to the north of Sri Lanka.
The visiting Defence Secretary and military chiefs on arrival in Mannar were received by Brigadier Channa Gunatillake, Commander, Mannar Area Headquarters and the livewire behind ongoing Mannar north operations (Task Force 1), Brigadier Shavindra Silva who afterwards gave a briefing on the status quo of the continuing humanitarian operations to the visiting team.
Mr. Gotabhaya Rajapaksa hailing the military tours de force of valiant troops in the area, during the brief meeting with Division, Brigade and unit commanders in the 58 Division office, wanted all ground commanders to extend his appreciation and warm greetings to troops and their commanders engaged in operations. Mr. Rajapaksa, giving a patient hearing to the ground commanders encouraged them to further boost the morale of the soldiers and plan future operations accordingly to wrest control of Tiger (LTTE) held areas eliminating terrorism from the two provinces. Mr. Rajapaksa also touched on the question of resettlement of civilians arriving in cleared areas following LTTE threats and a few other related issues.
Air Chief Marshal Donald Perera, Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka, Brigadier Shavindra Silva and several other senior officers contributed to the discussions at 58 Division office.
Later on Mr. Rajapaksa and the military duo flew to Security Forces Headquarters Wanni (SFHQ-W) in Vavuniya where Major General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander, (SFHQ-W) after receipt of them, briefed them on current security developments in the whole of Wanni.
Mr. Rajapaksa addressing all Divisional commanders present at the venue evaluated the progress of continuing humanitarian operations and paid tribute to all ground commanders and soldiers for their achievements in the north of Welioya and elsewhere. Since the operations are reaching a very decisive phase, he reminded, that concerted efforts should be made to liberate trapped civilians living under LTTE diktats. Giving his concern over exodus of masses into cleared areas, Mr. Rajapaksa pointed out the importance of resettling them in a proper manner without letting them to fall prey to isolated Tiger elements that might infiltrate upon fall of those areas.
